Hides macOS menu bar icons and brings them back when you need them.

What it does

borg is a small menu bar organizer for macOS users whose menu bar is overflowing. You move the icons you want to hide to the left of a separator line by holding Command and dragging them, and borg hides them and brings them back with a single click or a keyboard shortcut. The app runs only in the menu bar, without opening a window.

Highlights

  • Opens no window: lives only in the menu bar via LSUIElement.
  • The hiding trick: inflate a separator NSStatusItem to twice the width of the widest screen, pushing the icons to its left off screen.
  • Toggle with Ctrl-Alt-B; the shortcut can be changed in settings.
  • Auto-hide after inactivity (2-60 s) and reveal on hover (0.1-2 s).
  • A second section that always stays hidden, collapse in full screen, and named profiles.
  • Launch at login via SMAppService.
